Beatles Car Rides

We listen to a LOT of The Beatles on our car rides.  Here’s a typical car ride listening to Magical Mystery
Tour:
Tracks

  1. Magical Mystery Tour – we listen for a while until Jake pauses the song to point out that he is the only person who sang the word ‘Invitation’ and asks, “Daddy, why don’t you like that word?”
  2. Fool on the Hill – We all sing.  At the end part when it says ‘round and round and round’, we all move our heads around.
Jake announces that the next song will be “Flying” (he does this after every song … very important to him that he knows the order).
  3. Flying – No words.  We hum.  I am NOT allowed to sing “blah blah blah”.
  4. Blue Jay Way – Jake and Emma are convinced that this song scares Abby, so we skip it.
  5. Your Mother Should Know – Sing along.  Nothing special.
  6. I am the Walrus – Jake’s favorite.  We all sing.  Dad turns the volume down for 3 seconds at the 2:00 mark to avoid the word “pornographic”.
  7. Hello Goodbye – Hand gestures.  Point for “you”, thumb pointed at your self for ‘I’, and wave for ‘Goodbye’ and ‘Hello’.
  8. Strawberry Fields Forever – The kids think the end sounds like a train and always point it out.
  9. Penny Lane – The kids ask me if we could drive to Penny Lane.  I try to explain where England is.
  10. Baby You’re a Rich Man – Sing along.
  11. All You Need is Love – Sing “Love” really loudly.  Talk about God’s love.

Beatles Rock Band

We bought Beatles Rock Band the other day. It’s been a lot of fun for the whole family. We’ve all played together a few times. Mommy and Daddy on guitar and Jake and Emma trade off drums and vocals.

The kids favorite songs are ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds’, ‘Yellow Submarine’ (which I secretly loathe) and ‘Taxman’ (which I told them is about Obama).

Emma kind of be-bops through it, but Jake gets frustrated if he isn’t perfect (or at least better than Daddy). I’ve not been able to teach him that failure is good if you learn from it.

I’ve kind of had to laugh at the concept of a video game focused on The Beatles… 17 year old Larry would not have done well in school if this game had been around. Too fun!
